Maree Gilbert is an Australian contemporary multidisciplinary artist working in painting, drawing, ceramics, and multimedia printmaking. Growing up between Australia’s World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef and Wet Tropics Rainforest, the natural environment of the east coast reefs, islands, coral cays and the flora and fauna are recurring visual motifs in her work. Residing and working on an island offshore from the Queensland coast, her work explores the interconnection between the land and sea, with a focus on promoting the urgency of protecting our coastal and oceanic provinces. She explores the relationship between organic and inorganic, energy and movement and anthropogenic impacts on the natural world.

Maree holds a Bachelor of Arts from James Cook University, QLD and is currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Visual Art at the University of Southern Queensland majoring in Studio Practice. Maree has previously worked in environmental and marine conservation and has had a life-long association with the Great Barrier Reef. She has a deep wonder and respect for our ocean which flows through her art.
