Maree Gilbert is a contemporary multidisciplinary artist based in Australia, working across painting, drawing, ceramics, and multimedia printmaking. Growing up between the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef and Wet Tropics Rainforest, she draws continual inspiration from the rich ecosystems of the East Coast, the reefs, islands, coral cays, and the unique flora and fauna that inhabit them. These environments form recurring visual and conceptual motifs throughout her work.
Now living and working on an island off the Queensland coast, Maree's practice investigates the interconnection between land and sea, emphasizing the need for greater understanding and conservation of our coastal and oceanic regions. Her work explores the relationships between organic and inorganic forms, the dynamics of energy and movement, and the far-reaching impacts of human activity on the natural world.
Maree holds a Bachelor of Arts from James Cook University, Queensland, and is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Visual Art at the University of Southern Queensland, majoring in Studio Practice. With a background in environmental and marine conservation, she brings both scientific insight and personal reverence into her creative process. Her lifelong association with the Great Barrier Reef continues to inform a practice grounded in curiosity, care, and deep respect for the ocean.
